AKC Family Dog is a comprehensive good manners program for all dogs, whether purebred or mixed breed. While participating in enjoyable activities that are fun for both dogs and people, dogs become well-socialized and develop a lifelong bond with their owners.

Within the AKC Family Dog organizational umbrella are programs that teach family members how to best communicate with their dogs. The CGC programs (AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy, Canine Good Citizen, and AKC Community Canine and Urban CGC) begin with teaching basic skills such as sit, down, and come and they build on these skills as dogs move from one activity to the next. The result is a dog that any owner can be proud to take into the community.

​Open to all breeds of dogs, this test involves your dog performing a series of 12 exercises that are typical for a farm environment such as being in close proximity to livestock (who are always penned to avoid any altercations); jumping and staying on hay/straw bales; walking on unusual terrain; and jumping over logs. There is no herding involved. Instead, the goal is to assess his aptitude as a working farm dog by exhibiting self-control, confidence and trust with you or his handler.

2. Runs (community runs such as a Turkey Trot, Spring Scurry, etc.)

3. Walks and hikes (Independent or Group)

6. AKC Parent Club Performance Titles (e.g., pack dog, sledding)

For each of the 3 levels of titles, a minimum number of points must be earned in at least 2 categories for the title to be awarded.

The AKC Rally® Virtual Program is a fun family sport for you and your dog! The sport requires dog and handler teams to perform training skills such as sit, down, stay, etc. as they move through a course of 10-20 different signs that designate what skill to display. Virtual Rally courses can be set up in your backyard or local park. Rally is about working happily together as a team with unlimited communication from you to your dog. It’s a perfect starting point for those who are new to canine sports!

Virtual Home Manners is the answer for when you want to continue your dog’s training from the comfort of your home. The program assesses for the 10 necessary skills that well-mannered dogs need at home. Each VHM skill focuses on gaining basic control of your dog, building a stronger relationship between you and your dog, and helping your dog become a well-behaved canine. The  Virtual Water Test  is a convenient option for owners to demonstrate their dog’s ability to retrieve over water. The owner or handler submits a video of a dog performing the water test. The dog’s performance is evaluated by two field trials or hunting test judges. The owner will receive an e-certificate proving their dog passed the test.

The Virtual Scent Work Test (VSWT) provides dogs and owners an activity that utilizes their dog’s natural ability to detect search items from the comfort of home! Teams can work at their own pace to find everyday items hidden in various locations, all while developing skills and confidence along the way! The VSWT is the perfect way for owners to bond with their dogs and get started in the sport of AKC Scent Work.

The Agility Course Test (ACT) is an entry-level event designed to introduce and welcome dogs and their handlers to the AKC sport of Agility and is perfect for dogs that are working agility equipment at a beginner level. Those looking to participate can get started from anywhere, whether that be their backyard or local agility training facility.
